Nova Scotia Snow Sport Helmet Act Bill 131

On December 6, 2011 the Minister of Health and Wellness announced that as of November 1st 2012 it will be mandatory for all skiers and snowboarders to wear an appropriate helmet on Nova Scotia’s three commercially operated ski hills. Please see the Snow Sport Act helmet document linked for some interesting background information.

Important points to note:
1)    Public health inspectors will enforce the legislation. A fine of not less than $250 will be levied for the offence. Parents will be issued the fine if they knowingly permit a child under 16 to  violate the legislation
2)    There is no onus on ski resort operators to enforce the law; ski resort operators will post signage advertising the law.

Congratulations to the Nova Scotian ski resort operators for being part of the consultative process that has allowed the Nova Scotia government to bring this legislation into law. Nova Scotia is the first province in Canada to do so.

Please follow the website regularly for further updates regarding the process of this Bill.
