Final Team Selection Criteria

INTRODUCTION
The Alpine Ski competition of the 2011 Canada Winter Games will be held in at Ski Wentworth in Nova Scotia. The Alpine events will take place during the second week of the Games February 19th-27th 2011. The competition will consist of Slalom, Giant Slalom and Super Combined races. Alpine Ski Nova Scotia (ASNS), as the Provincial Sport organization ( PSO) for alpine skiing in Nova Scotia, will select the 5 males and 5 females, plus 1 alternate male and 1 alternate female, to be members of the NS 2011 Canada Winter Games team which will represent NS at the Alpine ski competitions. The following describes the criteria identified by ASNS for selecting the team.
ELIGIBLITY
Each athlete must comply with all aspects of the 2011 Canada Winter Games Alpine Skiing Technical Package published by the Canada Games Council and available at http://www.canadagames.ca/Content/Sports/2011%20Techncial%20Packages.asp?langid=1 and is also provided as a separate attachment to this document.
SELECTION PROCESS
STEP 1 THE CORE TEAM April 30th 2009
April 30th 2009: All Nova Scotia Club Presidents received a communication from the Canada Games Committee asking them to circulate information to their 2011 Canada Games age eligible athletes regarding extra training opportunities that would be available to athletes expressing an interest. This group of athletes is known as the CORE TEAM.
STEP 2 THE DEVELOPMENT TEAM
The DEVELOPMENT TEAM will be named on Saturday March 27th 2010. Once the Development Team has been named the list is final. The Development Team will be made up of the top 10 males and 10 females ( ties included , unless ties occur in 10th place, then team could be made up of 21 or 22 members ) from all the 2011 age eligible athletes based on the total of their Slalom, Giant Slalom , and Super Giant Slalom 2009-2010 National Points as of March 22nd 2010 as posted on the Alpine Canada website www.acapoints.ca. The Development Team can be made up of a maximum of four over-age athletes per gender (over-age means 17-19 years old as of December 31st 2010).
STEP 3 THE FINAL TEAM
Members of the DEVELOPMENT TEAM will try out for the FINAL TEAM. The Final Team of 5 males & 5 females per gender + one alternate per gender will be selected based on the highest accumulated World Cup point results from 8 out of 12 one run races during two sanctioned Ski Derbys.
- Each Derby will consist of 6 one run timed races split equally between Slalom and Giant Slalom and based on the format used to run National Points races. All Development Team members , and Clubs, will receive a copy of the Derby rules & format during the 2009-2010 season
- DERBY # 1 April 2010 Easter Weekend at Ski Wentworth ,N.B., or Quebec
- DERBY # 2 As soon as possible after Christmas 2010 @ Ski Wentworth, N.B. or Quebec
- In total each athlete will be able to drop their 2 worst Slalom and 2 worst Giant Slalom results. Only 8/12 results will be used to calculate their total World Cup points based on where they finish in each run

- The Final Team can be made up of a maximum of two over-age athletes per gender
Tie Breaker explanation
For the FINAL team selection, in the event of a tie for the final spot, the following methods will be used to break the tie:
- World Cup points from all races common to both racers will be totalled and compared. Highest score wins
- If still tied, the tie will be broken based on the sum of the tied athletes times for all the GS and SL races that were common to both athletes..Lowest total time wins
- The Final Team will be named no later than January 31st 2011
COMPETITIVE STATUS
- Athletes who will be trying out for the 2011 Canada Winter Games DEVELOPMENT Team during the 2009-10 ski season must have a valid 2009-10 National competitor card that lists Nova Scotia as their Division; and, be a member in good standing of ASNS.The National card application must be submitted by the athletes NS Club to ASNS no later than DEC 12th, 2009. Any sanctions against an athlete by ASNS or ACA that affect their competitive status will also apply to their Canada Games eligibility.
- A member is considered in “Good Standing” with Alpine Ski Nova Scotia provided that:
- All dues for the current year have been paid by the stated deadline(s);
- All monies owing to his/her home Club and/or to Alpine Ski Nova Scotia from previous years ( including for special events ) have been paid by the stated deadline(s)
- The member has read and accepted their home Clubs Code of Conduct Policy and any amendments that may be made thereto from time to time.
- Athletes who will be trying out for the 2011 Canada Winter Games FINAL Team during the 2010-2011 ski season must have a valid 2010-2011 National competitor card that lists Nova Scotia as their Division; and, be a member in good standing of ASNS .The National card application must be submitted by the athletes NS Club to ASNS no later than DEC 12th, 2010. Any sanctions against an athlete by ASNS or ACA that affect their competitive status will also apply to their Canada Games eligibility.

UNFORESEEN CIRCUMSTANCES
The CD-East PSO Presidents Committee, in consultation with the CD-East Coaches Committee, reserves the right to deal with any unforeseen circumstances not specifically provided for in the criteria
